Summary

The Local Authority (LA) in Manchester is responsible for creating admission arrangements for community and voluntary controlled schools. Admission arrangements for voluntary aided schools, foundation schools, free schools, and academies are determined by their Governing Body. All applicants must apply to their home LA, and Manchester LA will communicate the outcome.

Application forms are available online or via phone and should be returned to the School Admissions Service. These arrangements apply to Reception place applicants, while nursery admissions are handled directly by the school.

The LA includes provisions for Reception applicants, such as: arrangements not applying to nursery admissions, the need to apply for a Reception place after nursery admission, no guaranteed admission from nursery to the school, the option to defer entry within the school year, the option for summer-born children to be admitted out of their normal age group, and the option for part-time attendance until compulsory school age.

The Published Admission Number (PAN) indicates the number of places a school has in the entry year, and admission is typically limited to this number.

If there are more applicants than available places, the oversubscription criteria will be applied to prioritize applicants. The oversubscription criteria include: children in local authority care or who were previously in care, children with exceptional medical/social needs, children with siblings at the school, and all other children. Priority within each category is given based on the distance between the child’s home and the school. Category 2 applications require supporting evidence from a doctor or social worker.
