Summary

This thesis examines the development of a Campus Sustainability Statement (CSS) through a Change Laboratory research-intervention project, where stakeholders jointly developed the concept and manifested their transformative agency. The analysis draws on workshop recordings and semi-structured interviews, using a framework of concept development and transformative agency derived from activity theory. The study highlights the importance of collaborative concept development in addressing terminological barriers, engendering staff support, and developing transformative agency. Key findings include the role of resisting and criticizing in developing the CSS concept, and how the formulation of the CSS was shaped by early criticism and principled resistance. The research contributes to the literature on implementing sustainability in higher education, emphasizing the importance of collaborative concept development in driving action and change.
