Summary

The Chinese language underwent a typological shift from synthetic to analytic, with causativity expressed mainly analytically using 使-shǐ-make (SHI-cxn) in Mandarin, unlike Old and Middle Chinese which used labile verbs or morphological causatives. This study proposes a corpus-based diachronic analysis of SHI-cxn to investigate its development and relation to the Macro-event Hypothesis, focusing on two research questions: the distributional features of SHI-cxn across Chinese stages and whether its development supports the Macro-event Hypothesis. Preliminary findings show host-class expansion and changes in verb collexemes and constructions across stages, with SHI-cxn preferring activity verbs in Old Chinese and change-of-state verbs in Mandarin.
