Summary

Speech acts are actions or intents accomplished through language, inferred by hearers, and can be performative or constative, with performatives being utterances that perform actions and constatives being statements that describe or report events. The theory of speech acts, developed by Austin, distinguishes between performatives and constatives, and identifies felicity conditions for successful performatives, including appropriate persons, circumstances, execution, and intentions.
