Summary

This PhD thesis investigates the use of transformative educational strategies to develop knowledge of Australia's east-side neighbours through French-language instruction. The research found that students had limited knowledge of Australia's east-side neighbours prior to the curriculum intervention, but it was possible to increase their knowledge and international-mindedness through the French-language curriculum. However, the dominance of France-centric curriculum orientation poses challenges for adjusting curriculum perspective and practice. The study suggests that contextual transformation of practice in the French-language classroom is possible with time, support, resources, and adjustments to national curriculum priorities, as well as a change in teacher's frame of reference.
