Summary

This study explores the relationship between prepositions 'over', 'into', and 'through' and their preceding and following nouns, using concepts from corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics. 1,366 instances from the ICE-GB corpus were examined, indicating a relationship between preposition senses and co-occurring nouns. The results reinforce and amend semantic networks proposed by Lakoff, Tyler, and Evans, and draw on statistical information regarding human, concrete object, and abstract object classifications to explore the distribution of sense of 'over', 'into', and 'through'.
