Summary

Omar's 2019 PhD thesis investigates the implementation of English language curriculum reform in Libyan secondary schools, focusing on the gap between intended learner-centred approach and actual teacher-centred practice. The study, using Cultural Historical Activity Theory, found inconsistencies between teachers' reported positive views on Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and their actual practice, influenced by their experiences, school culture, and professional context. The findings suggest that teaching preparation, professional support, and school culture are interconnected with the quality of students' English language experiences. Recommendations include adjusting the university English curriculum, establishing coordination between teacher training programs, schools, and curriculum designers, and conducting further research to address the nationwide problem of ineffective English language teaching in Libya.
