Summary

This dissertation examines cross-dialectal phonetic variation and lexical encoding in Peninsular Spanish, focusing on /s/ perception in Seville capital. It investigates dialect classification, evaluation, and auditory lexical processing of three varieties: Seville capital, Seville outskirts, and central Spain. The study found high dialect classification accuracy, a prestige hierarchy with central voices evaluated highly for status and Seville capital voices for solidarity, and flexibility in processing the three variants. Results also showed greater processing difficulty for the Seville outskirts variant and differential encoding with processing benefits for Seville capital and central Spain talkers. The study demonstrates the interaction between social and linguistic information in spoken word recognition and language attitudes.
