Provisional 2010 data shows increases in A level maths and science entries, with maths entries reaching 70,000, biology entries surpassing their previous peak at 53,000, chemistry entries reaching a new peak of 40,000, and physics entries falling but showing a slow recovery. The number of A level grades A*-B also increased for all subjects, with 67% of maths entrants, 51% of biology entrants, 59% of chemistry entrants, and 55% of physics entrants achieving these grades. AS level entries in all four maths and science subjects increased in 2010, suggesting further increases in A level entries are likely in 2011. GCSE maths and science results also showed improvements, with pass rates remaining stable and the percentage of entrants achieving high grades increasing. However, there is considerable variation in maths and science participation rates between Local Authorities. Prior attainment is a strong predictor of A level entry, with pupils who achieved high grades at GCSE being more likely to take A levels in maths and science.
