Summary

Gaining physical access to potential respondents is crucial for human resource development (HRD) survey research, but it is often problematic and rarely discussed in research methods texts. Despite its importance, the process of gaining access is frequently overlooked, and inside accounts of the challenges faced are scarce. This paper addresses the paucity of advice and limited reporting on gaining physical access to potential respondents for large multi-organization surveys, providing two inside accounts of applied research projects utilizing Internet surveys and offering nine recommendations for research practice to mitigate potential problems.
