Summary

This thesis investigated 13 experienced expatriate lecturers' perceptions of continuing professional development (CPD) at a Middle Eastern university. The study found that the mandatory nature and content of CPD affected participants' perceptions and engagement, and that CPD overlooked their experience and tacit knowledge, impacting their views of CPD and professional identity. The results also showed that the lecturers' profile as self-initiated expatriates was a key factor in their CPD requirements and professional outlook, and that they desired targeted, personalized CPD in areas such as pedagogy, professional inquiry, and cultural awareness.
