Summary

The Foundation Phase Framework is the statutory curriculum for three to seven year olds in Wales, introduced in 2010. It aims to make learning enjoyable and effective, encouraging creativity and imagination. The framework consists of seven Areas of Learning: Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity; Language, Literacy and Communication Skills; Mathematical Development; Welsh Language Development; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development; and Creative Development. The revised framework, issued in 2015, incorporates the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework and includes new outcome statements for assessment. Implementation dates for the revised Areas of Learning and outcome statements are specified, with the revised framework becoming a legal requirement from September 2015 and the revised outcome statements from September 2017.
