Summary

This study examined the factors affecting the English-speaking skills of Bacongnon-speaking students at Gatbo National High School. The results showed that students struggled with accuracy, fluency, and intonation, with few able to use correct grammatical structures, pronounce English words correctly, or use appropriate intonation. The study identified psychological, linguistic, instructional, and environmental factors that affect English-speaking skills, including intrinsic motivation, vocabulary, lack of motivation, and limited interaction. The overall mean of the extent of effects of these factors was 3.17, 3.25, 3.54, and 2.83, respectively. To address these factors, the study recommends exposing students to activities that focus on vocabulary building, correct grammatical structures, and pronunciation, as well as providing appropriate learning tasks, sufficient resources, and motivation. A podcast-based lesson is also proposed to improve English-speaking skills.
