Summary

The development of attitudes to gender and sexuality in the early and modern Christian Church is examined, using neurophysiological and psychological research to understand gender and sexually variant behavior. The study challenges traditional Christian teaching, which condemns all forms of gender and sexually variant behavior as disordered, and instead suggests that the same criteria for use and abuse should apply to both heterosexual and same-sex acts. The analysis uses case studies, including gender dysphoria, to demonstrate that personality and identity development are identity-driven processes, and that conflicts arising from these are also identity-driven. The study concludes that the Christian Church should focus on combating all forms of abusive sex, rather than making homosexuality a scapegoat for sexual abuse.
