Course description: Introduces key topics and concepts in cultural anthropology, examining cross-cultural examples and teaching holistic understanding.
Course requirements:
- Class participation (20%): attend tutorials, read assigned readings, participate in discussions.
- Ethnographic paper (30%): 4-5 page paper on fieldtrip to ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong.
- Final exam (50%): 40 MC questions, three short questions, and one essay question.
Readings and books:
- Lavenda and Schultz, Core Concepts in Cultural Anthropology (2013).
- Spradley and McCurdy, Conformity and Conflict: Readings in Cultural Anthropology (2012 & 2015).
Course schedule includes topics such as culture and anthropology, expressive culture, social organization, political anthropology, economic anthropology, families and kinship, and globalization.
