Summary

This research analyzes the rhetorical styles used by English Department students of Yogyakarta State University in writing introduction sections of research articles, using the Create a Research Space (CARS) model by Swales (1990, 2004), which evaluates macro and micro strategies in justifying research topic importance. The research is qualitative, with the researcher as the main instrument, and uses a data sheet to classify and analyze data based on the CARS model's macro and micro structures. The data collection involves selecting research articles from the English Language Teaching Journal of Yogyakarta State University, published in 2018, using purposive sampling, and data analysis is done according to the CARS model to reveal pedagogical implications and propose writing activities for academic writing classes.
