This policy complements the Teaching and Learning and Feedback Policy. St. John’s Primary School aims to enable all children to ‘Fly High Like an Eagle’ through assessment that fosters confident, successful, and independent learners with a lifelong love of learning.

Key aims include ensuring all pupils make good or better progress, identifying learning needs, guiding teaching and support, evaluating teaching practice, raising achievement standards, informing parents, ensuring continuity during transitions, motivating pupils and staff, complying with statutory requirements, and informing school leadership.

Core principles state assessment must be central to teaching and learning, honest in outcomes and judgements, and appropriate in purpose, inclusivity, evidence use, and minimal procedures.

The school uses two assessment types: Formative Assessment (day-to-day evaluation to identify gaps and tailor teaching) and Summative Assessment (end-of-unit/term academic snapshots).

Annual reports detail each child’s development and attainment in Reading, Writing, and Maths against national expectations, with statutory assessment results reported to parents.
