Summary

The traditional business model of American newspapers was broken by the 21st century due to the growth of internet news sources, leading to a decline in readers and advertisers. In response, media entrepreneurs explored new revenue sources, including nonprofit models. In 2004, journalist Neil Morgan and investor Buzz Woolley founded the Voice of San Diego (VOSD), a nonprofit news organization focused on local accountability journalism. Despite initial success, including growing staff and breaking important stories, VOSD faced challenges in finding sustainable funding, relying on philanthropy, and maintaining its tax status as a nonprofit. The organization's leaders considered alternative funding models, such as membership programs and community events, to ensure the long-term viability of the nonprofit news outlet.
