Summary

Developing scientific communication skills is a major educational goal in science education, with learning to produce scientific texts essential for understanding science. This study aimed to design and examine a teaching and learning environment based on Adapted Primary Literature (APL) to promote scientific writing skills in high-school biology majors. The research used a Design-Based Research approach, consisting of four phases, and found that APL can serve as an apprenticeship genre for high-school biology students' writing, promoting socialization into the scientific community. The study developed a technology-enhanced learning environment called "SWIM" (Scientific Writing Interactive Model), which improved students' scientific writing skills, writing strategies, and appreciation for writing in science. The research concluded that effective instruction of scientific writing should be based on integrated genre-process pedagogy, including the construction of genre knowledge, teaching of writing strategies, and extensive feedback and collaboration.
