Summary

Perlmutter and Orelli (1973) observe that Slovenian exhibits certain syntactic phenomena and propose that these generalizations explain the appearance of the Orphan Accusative construction. The analysis relies on rule ordering, but this approach has several unfortunate properties. However, when recast in non-transformational terms, the analysis becomes more satisfactory, but the involvement of the grammatical feature of animacy proves problematic. The Orphan Accusative construction arises when a noun is replaced by a pronoun, and the analysis can be translated into a framework consistent with generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG). In this framework, pronouns are distributed freely in syntactic structures, and the Orphan Accusative construction can be explained without relying on rule ordering or transformational rules.
