Summary

Die Notwendigkeit, Drittmittel einzuwerben, prägt das deutsche und internationale Wissenschaftssystem. Die Grundausstattung der Institute wird immer geringer, sodass die Einwerbung von Drittmitteln notwendig ist, um die Forschung zu sichern. Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) fördert Sonderforschungsbereiche (SFB) mit langfristigen Forschungsprojekten an Universitäten. Die SFBs stellen für Universitäten einen Zugewinn an langfristigen Forschungsmöglichkeiten und einen Prestigegewinn dar. Das Entscheidungsverfahren für SFBs ist zweistufig und besteht aus einem Beratungsgespräch und einer Begutachtung. Die DFG förderte 2011 250 SFBs mit insgesamt rund 540 Mio. Euro.
