In Japan, the number of students requiring special educational support has been increasing. As of 2020, 6.5% of students in regular classes were suspected to have developmental disorders, such as learning disabilities (LD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The number of students with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments, has also been rising.

Special support schools, special support classes, and individualized instruction are provided to support students with disabilities. The number of students attending special support schools has increased, with 144,800 students as of 2020, which is 1.2 times the number in 2009. The number of students in special support classes has also increased, with 302,500 students as of 2020, which is 2.1 times the number in 2009.

The Japanese government has implemented measures to support students with disabilities, including individualized education plans and instruction tailored to each student's needs. However, there is still a need for further support and resources to ensure that all students with disabilities receive the education they deserve.
