Special Eurobarometer 243, "Europeans and their Languages," was conducted from November to December 2005, surveying 28,694 citizens in 25 EU countries, as well as Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, and Turkey. The study explores Europeans' experiences and perceptions of multilingualism, with three main themes: speaking two languages in addition to their mother tongue, lifelong language learning from an early age, and the importance of education. The survey recognizes 20 official EU languages and around 60 other indigenous and non-indigenous languages spoken in the area. Multilingualism is seen as a key feature of Europe, contributing to democracy, equality, transparency, and competitiveness. The European Commission aims to encourage language learning, promote a healthy multilingual economy, and provide access to EU information in citizens' own languages.
