Highways England proposes to improve the A303 past Stonehenge by providing a dual two-lane carriageway between Amesbury and Berwick Down in Wiltshire, helping unlock economic growth in the South West by improving journey reliability, increasing safety, and improving connectivity while protecting and enhancing the environment. The scheme includes a northern bypass of Winterbourne Stoke, a new junction between the A303 and A360, a twin-bore tunnel past Stonehenge, and a new junction between the A303 and A345, with measures to avoid, prevent, or reduce significant environmental effects, such as minimizing landtake within the World Heritage Site and providing bunds and sympathetic regrading of earthworks. The scheme aims to achieve four key objectives: transport, economic growth, cultural heritage, and environment and community, and includes features such as new chalk grassland areas, hedgerows, and green bridges to maintain ecological connectivity.
