Summary

The Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge's tidal marsh and barrier beach restoration project has received a 2019 Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for Natural Resources. The $38 million project, completed in 18 months, restored 2 miles of dunes and barrier beach, and 4,000 acres of back-barrier tidal marsh by re-establishing natural tidal flow. The project has shown significant results, including the growth of marsh grasses, the return of shorebirds and waterfowl, and the improvement of habitat for migratory birds and marine life. Specifically, nearly 100 piping plover chicks have fledged their nests on the restored barrier beach over the past three summers, and thousands of horseshoe crabs arrive each spring to lay eggs, which are an important food source for endangered rufa red knot. The restoration has also provided protection to nearby communities and made the coastal environment more resilient through multiple intense storms.
