Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic threatens the food security and nutrition of millions, with hundreds of millions already suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Immediate action is needed to prevent a global food emergency, as the pandemic's effects, combined with mitigation measures and the emerging recession, could disrupt food systems, leading to severe health and nutrition consequences. Border restrictions, lockdowns, and supply chain disruptions are already affecting food access, with many people struggling to access fresh produce, dairy, meat, and fish. Prior to the pandemic, over 820 million people were chronically food insecure, and this number could nearly double by the end of the year. The pandemic could push 49 million people into extreme poverty, and each percentage point drop in global GDP could result in an additional 0.7 million stunted children. Actors in all parts of the food system are impacted, and targeted measures are needed to alleviate liquidity constraints and facilitate continued production and access to food and nutrition. The pandemic highlights the need to transform the world's food systems, making them more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient, and three sets of priority actions are suggested to address immediate, near-, and medium-term needs.
