Summary

A study in Accra, Ghana, used 2017 survey data from 668 low- and middle-income residents to compare household-level food security using three metrics: Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), Household Food Insecurity Access Prevalence (HFIAP), and Food Consumption Score (FCS). Results showed 70% of households were food insecure according to HFIAP, but only 2% fell below acceptable thresholds measured by FCS. Households relied on purchased food from traditional markets, local stalls, and street hawkers, with few sourcing food from modern supermarkets or producing their own food. General linear models found household assets, education, and demographic characteristics were significantly associated with food security outcomes according to HFIAS and HFIAP, but not FCS, highlighting limitations of rural-centric food security measurement approaches in urban contexts.
