COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by a new virus, primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets. The NJ Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities, advises individuals and families to stay informed, practice basic prevention measures, and plan and prepare to decrease the possibility of infection. Prevention measures include hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth, and covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Planning and preparation involve maintaining extra food and water, ensuring prescription medication refills, and identifying a room for separating someone who is sick. COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure and include cough, shortness of breath, fever, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and new loss of taste or smell. If someone develops symptoms, contact a health care professional, especially if they have been in close contact with a person who has traveled internationally or has COVID-19.
