Summary

The city of Flagstaff recognizes the historic contributions of Black entrepreneurs and business owners, but notes that their voices are underrepresented in the local business sector, employment opportunities, and economic development. To address this, sustainable initiatives are needed to ensure Black economic and employment parity, and to promote equity in the city's economic growth. Currently, only two brick and mortar Black-owned businesses exist in Flagstaff, and general representation of Black business is limited. The city seeks to understand the missing pieces of culture in its community development, and to encourage meaningful change to rectify economic disparities, increase cultural visibility, and ensure continued economic and cultural growth. Key questions include identifying primary concerns facing the Black community, missing business representation, and challenges faced in securing employment, as well as what changes are needed to promote Black economic inclusion and impact. According to the 2012 Survey of Business Owners, 14.65% of firms in Flagstaff are minority-owned, while 78.93% are non-minority owned.
