Summary

The Office of the Inspector General conducted an audit of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) field office performance for certain key workloads. The audit found concerns with the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of workload data. The SSA uses various reports to monitor field office workloads, but the audit was unable to determine which sources provided accurate and complete data. The audit analyzed five key workloads: title II Old-Age and Survivors Insurance claims, title II Disability Insurance claims, title XVI Supplemental Security Income Disabled/Blind claims, title II and XVI Status Changes and Benefit Verifications, and Enumerations. The findings showed that higher performing field offices cleared more claims and had larger volumes of visitors, but also had longer wait times. The audit recommended that the SSA identify the most accurate and reliable data source for workload count and processing time data and develop a methodology for measuring and monitoring nationwide field office performance. The SSA agreed with the recommendations.
