Summary

A new development blueprint for Hong Kong has been rolled out, with large-scale developments such as the Lantau Tomorrow Vision and Northern Metropolis expected to surge construction volume. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has researched the foreseeable workload and local engineering manpower supply situation, estimating a 28% and 50% increase in construction expenditure by 2030/31 and 2040/41 respectively. The current 14,000 engineering professionals in the construction industry may not be sufficient to meet the demand, with a widening supply gap expected. A vicious circle of reduced quality, increased regulatory scrutiny, and brain drain is exacerbating the issue. Recommendations include improving working environments, strengthening the engineering community, cultivating interest among youngsters, and promoting engineering to the public to attract young talents and reduce the vicious circle.
