Summary

Around 80 experts from nearly 40 countries met in Lima, Peru, from 3 to 5 December 2018, to discuss corruption involving vast quantities of assets. The meeting aimed to share lessons learned, consider the impact of such corruption, and identify good practices to tackle it. The experts recalled the United Nations Convention against Corruption as a global framework to prevent and fight corruption, and noted that corruption involving vast quantities of assets can have a significant impact on security, the environment, and human rights. They identified key enablers of such corruption, including the use of shell companies, financial institutions, and complex networks of accountants and lawyers. The experts also stressed the importance of international cooperation, asset recovery, and the identification of beneficial owners of corporate vehicles abused in corruption cases.
