Summary

Mobile operations on multi-lane highways require a protective vehicle with a flashing arrow panel (FAP) and a truck/trailer mounted attenuator (TMA), with high-intensity lights activated and positioned at least 150 feet behind the work vehicle. Additional TMAs may be used, spaced at least 150 feet apart, with FAPs operating in the appropriate mode. A shoulder advance warning vehicle with a FAP and lane closure sign is used when a shoulder is available, while an advance warning vehicle with a FAP or CMS and lane closure sign is used when no shoulder is available. Roadways posted at 45 mph or below require a protective vehicle with a FAP and optional TMA, with high-intensity lights activated and positioned at least 150 feet in advance of the work space.
