The 73rd amendment to the Indian Constitution made the Panchayati Raj system a uniform phenomenon across the country, with the Karnataka Panchayati Raj Act 1993 replacing the previous act of 1983. The Grama Panchayat, with 5673 units in Karnataka, is formed based on population and contiguity criteria, with the Deputy Commissioner having the power to alter its area or headquarters.
