Summary

A McClatchy-Marist Poll found that 70% of Americans believe the nation is moving in the wrong direction, with only 21% saying it's on the right track. This is a significant change from June, when 59% thought the country was on the wrong track and 32% said it was on the right one. The proportion of Americans who think the nation needs its course corrected is the largest since President Barack Obama took office in 2009. A plurality of Americans (47%) characterize the debt deal as bad for the nation, while 41% believe it's good. Registered voters have similar views, with 47% saying the agreement is bad for the country and 43% saying it's good. The poll also found that 77% of adults nationally say the debt ceiling debate has made them less confident in government in Washington. President Obama's job performance has changed little, with 44% of registered voters approving of the job he's doing and 46% disapproving.
