Summary

The Reservoir Protection Overlay Zone (RPOZ) regulations aim to protect public water supply reservoirs by regulating land uses and development within the reservoir drainage area. The RPOZ applies to proposed projects that may contaminate the water supply, and its boundaries are delineated using location data and must be shown on master zoning maps. The regulations prohibit certain uses, such as storage or production of hazardous materials, disposal of hazardous materials or solid wastes, and automobile service stations. Development proposals within the RPOZ must undergo review and impact studies to ensure that non-point source pollution is prevented, management practices are in place to remove pollutants, and erosion and sediment control measures are installed. Existing land uses identified as potential contaminating activities must comply with special requirements, including submitting a spill control plan.
