Summary

The Group of 77 and China appreciates the Joint Inspection Unit's (JIU) annual report for 2005 and its programme of work for 2006, commending the Unit's progress in improving report quality and relevance. The Group supports the JIU's efforts to avoid duplication of efforts, promote collaboration and coordination with other oversight bodies, and measure the impact of its recommendations. The Group also welcomes the inclusion of information on implementation and results achieved by organizations in their follow-up to JIU recommendations and the adoption of eight categories of impact to determine and report on the intended and actual impact of its recommendations. Additionally, the Group notes concerns regarding the Unit's limited research capacity, the lifting of an Inspector's immunity, and the stagnant budget, and encourages the Unit to continue submitting its work programme in advance to the Fifth Committee. The Group reiterates its support for the continued existence of the Unit and its mandate.
