Summary

Women have been barred from approximately 237,000 military positions throughout the country's history. However, the tables have turned, and the military is now seeking qualified women to fill these roles. Students at La Verne believe this is long overdue, with many feeling that everyone should have an equal opportunity to serve their country. According to the Women In Military Service For American Memorial Foundation, as of September 2011, women made up approximately 14.6 percent of all active duty service personnel. The ban on women in active combat was lifted earlier this January, and now women are free to choose whether or not they wish to serve on the front lines. The topic of women in a draft was also discussed, with some students feeling that women should be included, while others believe they should be exempt due to their role as caregivers.
