Ancestry is a broad concept that can mean different things to different people, referring to where their ancestors are from, their ethnic origin, or how they see themselves ethnically. The Census Bureau defines ancestry as a person's ethnic origin, heritage, descent, or "roots." In 2000, 80% of respondents to the long form specified at least one ancestry, with 58% reporting only one ancestry and 22% reporting two ancestries. The most frequent responses included German (42.8 million), Irish (30.5 million), African American (24.9 million), English (24.5 million), and Italian (15.6 million). The largest European ancestries have decreased in population, while African American, Hispanic, and Asian ancestries have increased, with the highest growth rates occurring in groups identified by a general heritage rather than a particular country of ancestry.
