Summary

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a skin condition characterized by dark, velvety patches, often found in skin folds, and is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM type 2). High insulin levels can stimulate skin cell growth, leading to AN, which may be an early indicator of DM type 2. AN is common in obese individuals, with 74% of the obese population exhibiting the condition. The presence of AN can be a warning sign for DM type 2, and early identification and treatment, including diet and exercise, may help prevent the development of the disease. Research suggests that AN may have autoimmune components, which could also be true for DM type 2, and that autoimmunity may play a role in the pathogenesis of both conditions.
