Cities are the source of humanity's greatest challenges, including pollution, disease, and socioeconomic crises, despite being engines of creativity, wealth, and economic growth. Rapid urbanization has led to global problems, with over half of the world's population now living in urban centers, expected to reach 80% by 2050. Cities are complex systems with interrelated components, but their problems are often treated independently, leading to ineffective policies and unintended consequences. However, cities also supply solutions, and an integrated, quantitative, and predictive understanding of urban dynamics is urgently needed. Research has shown that cities exhibit universal, quantifiable features, with size being the major determinant of most characteristics, and three main characteristics varying systematically with population: space required per capita, pace of socioeconomic activity, and economic and social diversification. These trends can be expressed as simple mathematical "laws," with economies of scale similar to those found in organisms and communities, suggesting that network dynamics underlie these regularities.
