Summary

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes detoxification of compounds with catechol groups, and its activity is influenced by a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with increased breast cancer risk. Flavonoids, found in high concentrations in plants, have antioxidant and estrogenic effects, and may protect against cancer through inhibition of oxidative damage. The average daily intake of mixed flavonoids is estimated to be 20-1000 mg, and repeated dietary intake can lead to high blood concentrations. Quercetin, a flavonoid, has a protective effect on oxidative DNA damage at concentrations as low as 1 µM. The main dietary sources of flavonoids are tea, coffee, chocolate, wine, and beer, rather than fruit and vegetables. Oxidative DNA damage, induced by oxygen radicals and other reactive species, can be decreased by supplementation with antioxidants or food rich in antioxidants.
