Summary

A study of 58 healthy men and women aged 20-80 found a significant positive correlation between age and skin stiffness, as well as between skin advanced glycation end products (AGEs) fluorescence and skin stiffness. The accumulation of AGEs in the skin, particularly Nε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), was associated with reduced skin elasticity and increased stiffness. In contrast, higher CML content in the corneum was associated with lower skin stiffness. Oxidative stress in the blood was not correlated with skin stiffness. The findings suggest that glycative stress, which leads to the accumulation of AGEs in the skin, may influence skin elasticity and viscoelasticity.
