Summary

VOCAL-NY, a syringe exchange program in Brooklyn, collaborated with Mount Sinai Hospital to integrate HCV testing and treatment, including hybrid onsite-telemedicine HCV treatment. From June 2020-March 2021, 235 clients were tested for HCV antibody, with 51 (21.7%) reactive, and 22 (43%) viremic. Of the 16 viremic clients informed of their results, 8 attended an initial HCV treatment telemedicine visit, 6 began treatment, 5 completed treatment, and 1 is still on treatment. Telemedicine is a feasible model for HCV treatment at syringe exchange programs during COVID-19, but enhanced strategies are needed to retain clients and address competing priorities.
