Summary

Food security is fundamental to good physical and mental health, but many people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in Canada experience food insecurity, with prevalence rates ranging from 49% to 71%. In Québec, the prevalence is estimated to be 58%. Food insecurity can lead to decreased adherence to antiretroviral therapy, low CD4 cell counts, mental health disorders, and psychosocial needs, ultimately affecting quality of life and survival. Certain groups, such as low-income families, people struggling with housing costs, injection drug users, and those with a history of incarceration, are at greater risk of food insecurity. Factors contributing to food insecurity include high housing costs, medication expenses, limited access to employment and job retention, stigmatization, and spatial access to affordable food. Community action is necessary to address food insecurity among PLHA, and initiatives such as thematic workshops, buyers' clubs, food banks, and community meals can help improve their health and quality of life.
