Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal, synchronous firing of neurons in the brain. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a common form, where seizures arise from one or more discrete locations. Dr. Victoria Morgan is using functional connectivity mapping to understand why focal epilepsy is difficult to treat, by viewing the brain as a network of interconnected points (nodes) and intercommunication between them (edges). Her research suggests that while the seizure focus may be similar in patients, the way activity is propagated around the network may differ, explaining why surgery is sometimes ineffective. Dr. Morgan's work aims to develop a framework to understand how epilepsy networks evolve over time and to identify biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment.
