Summary

Epilepsy is highly prevalent in people with intellectual disabilities, with estimates ranging from 16.1% to 30.7%, and is associated with increased mortality. A systematic review of 16 studies found that epilepsy was associated with increased mortality in people with intellectual disabilities, particularly in those experiencing recent seizures. The risk of mortality was higher in people with intellectual disabilities and epilepsy compared to the general population, people with intellectual disabilities without epilepsy, and people with epilepsy without intellectual disabilities. Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a significant concern, with inconsistent findings regarding its risk in people with intellectual disabilities. Services need to be equipped to manage epilepsy in people with intellectual disabilities to minimize the risk of death.
