Summary

Expedited partner therapy (EPT) is the practice of treating sex partners of persons with sexually transmitted diseases (STD) without a medical evaluation or counseling. EPT has been widely used for trichomoniasis and occasionally for gonorrhea and chlamydial infection. Studies suggest EPT is effective in preventing persistent or recurrent infection, with randomized controlled trials showing reduced rates of infection compared to standard partner management approaches. EPT was more effective in preventing gonorrhea than chlamydial infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has funded trials to compare EPT with standard approaches and assess behavioral predictors of treatment and reinfection.
