Summary

Community-acquired pneumonia is a leading cause of death in children under 5 years, with 156 million cases worldwide annually. This study analyzed the impact of viral etiology determination on hospitalization duration and treatment in children with severe lower respiratory tract infections. The main viral etiology was respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in 73.5% of cases. Although viral etiology was determined, antibiotics were used in 92% of cases, and hospitalization duration was 2.5 days longer compared to unspecified viral infection cases. The study found that determining viral etiology did not reduce hospitalization or change therapeutic approaches, with expenses being 30% higher in specified viral infection cases.
