Summary

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) are often used to treat Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), but research shows they are ineffective and potentially harmful. The (bio)psychosocial model, which underlies CBT/GET, is flawed and has been invalidated by studies demonstrating biological abnormalities in ME/CFS patients. Exertion, a key component of GET, can worsen symptoms, including post-exertional malaise, muscle pain, and neurocognitive impairment, due to underlying pathophysiological abnormalities such as inflammation and immune dysfunction. Therefore, it is unethical to use CBT/GET as a treatment for ME/CFS.
